About the File Sorter Tool
The File Sorter Tool lets you sort a batch of files by name, size or file type, then rename them with sequential numbers in that sorted order. The result is a logically ordered collection where file names reflect the actual sequence ā "sorted_1.jpg" is the smallest file, "sorted_2.jpg" is the next, and so on.
This is invaluable when order matters: sorting photos by size to find outliers, ordering documents alphabetically for consistent archives, or grouping files by extension before numbering them.
Five Sorting Methods
Name AāZ and Name ZāA sort alphabetically. Size Smallest First and Size Largest First order by file size. Extension AāZ groups files by their extension, then alphabetically within each group. After sorting, the naming pattern and sequential numbers are applied in the sorted order.
Sort First, Then Rename
The key advantage of this tool is that sorting happens before numbering. This means "sorted_1" is always the first item in your chosen order, not the first item you happened to upload. The preview shows the exact sorted sequence before you download.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does sorting affect numbering?
Files are sorted first, then numbered sequentially. So "sorted_1" is always the first file in your chosen order, "sorted_2" is second, etc.
Can I sort by date?
Browser security prevents reading file modification dates directly. For date-based sorting, use "Name AāZ" if your files have date-based names (which most cameras produce).
Does it change file content?
No. Only file names are modified. Content, quality and metadata remain untouched.
Are files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Files are read, sorted, renamed and zipped on your device.
What does "Extension AāZ" do?
Groups files by extension alphabetically ā all .csv files first, then .doc, then .jpg, etc. Within each extension group, files are sorted by name.
Is there a file limit?
No file count limit. Individual files up to 100MB each.
